Mel Gibson’s wife of 28 years has filed for divorce, setting the stage for one of the most expensive marriage break-ups in legal history. Under Californian law, Robyn Gibson could take half of her husband’s 900 million fortune. The two do not have a prenup agreement.

She filed papers in Los Angeles Superior Court weeks after Gibson was pictured frolicking on a beach in Costa Rica with a Russian musician called Oksana. The Oscar-winning actor is said to have become close to the Russian brunette on the set of his most recent film, but denies he has had an affair with the woman.

The court papers filed by 52-year-old Mrs Gibson cited ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason for the split. Within hours, Gibson filed a response to the divorce petition, revealing the couple separated in August 2006, just a month after his anti-Semitic rant to a police officer who’d just arrested him for drink driving.

He objects to paying spousal support and wants lawyers’ fees to be paid out of the couple’s joint property, the documents show.Should the battle turn nasty both parties have lined up high-profile lawyers to fight the fight. Gibson is using prominent divorce lawyer Robert Kaufman, whose star clients include Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and Reese Witherspoon. Robyn Gibson has lined up Laura Wasser, who has handled divorces for the likes of Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder.

The couple have seven children, six of whom are grown up. Mrs Gibson is seeking joint custody of the youngest, Tom, who is ten this week.

Despite the irreconcilable differences cited by Mrs Gibson, many in Hollywood believe the real reason behind the split is her husband’s close relationship with Oksana. She is one of the artists on the Australian-born actor’s recording label Icon and has been in the U.S. recording an album. Gibson denies that she is anything more than a colleague, but the pair have been snapped coming out of his trailer on the set of The Edge of Darkness, which is due for release this year.

  2. metro says:

    why should she get anything?

  3. Randy says:

Just being someones wife does not entitle you to a damn thing…Tell me why, since I play football, married a woman after I signed my contract, she should get anything for just being my wife. She has not shed one drop of sweat or has to fight with 350 offensive tackles in practice and during a game. She takes care of our home, which she does not even do that, we have a maid and cook, what is it she does. She donates my money to her church, sorry, that her father presides over, something funny about that huh!!! I am sure Mel’s wife did nothing to facilitate the making of movies he has made or starred in! She gets what she brought with her???

I pray for whomever Randy marries. A marriage is a partnernship. His job was to make movies….and I guess have affairs with women half his age. She raised his 7 kids. Took care of the home. She needs to be paid.

  4. Pnyx says:

Yeah! Mel must cough up. When she married him, he was a nobody. She’s entitled to half of what the family made after marriage. Randy, you’re a worm. If the woman isn’t your partner, divorce her. If she is, you owe her have of what you’re making. It’s not your (thy) money, it’s BOTH of your money. Pathetic loser!
