Oh Aubrey, you really did it this time! The ex-Danity Kane star put her foot in her over-injectioned mouth on Fox News’ Hannity Monday evening (August 31) when she referred to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro as ‘brilliant.’ Why she was on that program to begin with, is almost as stupefying as her comments.
“I met him and worked with him when I was in Cuba,” O’Day said. “I’m not defending his behavior in many instances, but I do have to say that I will 100 percent agree he’s an incredibly brilliant man.”
When Sean Hannity reminded O’Day that Castro was a murderer, Aubrey flippantly responded, “I’m sure I’ve met a lot of murderers in life. I’m not condoning [his actions]. [The United States has] supported a lot of murderers. I’m specifically addressing [Watson’s] comment suggesting that he is a brilliant man. I’m sure many murderers are brilliant people.”
To see the whole sordid mess, watch the video below:
Tuesday (September 1), Aubrey took to her Web site to clarify her statements:
I am so sad an opinion has become so misconstrued. I gave a nuanced, intellectually honest response and the tabloids are responding with sensationalist, hysterical nonsense.
If you would like to know my opinion in its entirety, here you go:
“Murderers and dictators generally are some of the smartest people out there – they just use their brain power for evil purposes. I don’t condone any of their evil behavior, but I was asked about their intellectual firepower…and in my opinion you can’t have a low IQ and wreak that much havoc on the world. What Hitler succeeded in doing, was deplorable… And I hope we never see such an abusive use of power again. Ultimately, an individual’s IQ is, sadly, not always indicative of a strong moral compass, and should not be confused for the purity of their heart and mind. My responses on “Hannity” reflect that distinction.”
“As I indicated on-air, Fidel Castro has outlived many US presidents. More specifically, Castro has, unfortunately, lorded over a communist state just 92 miles from the US for the better part of five decades to the significant detriment of the Cuban people. The actions of his tyrannical regime, however, are unquestionably evil and repulsive, and as I repeatedly stated, I could never condone such gut-wrenching behavior. Sean Hannity offered a narrow question directed at Castro’s intellectual acumen, and the scope of my response was similarly narrow.”
Well, when you put it that way, Aubrey, it sounds…like your publicist was working overtime on that statement.
