Back in May, the nine-year-old was the second Slumdog star to have their home destroyed in a week.
As a demolition team moved in, she rushed inside her family’s shack to grab the cherished blue dress she wore for the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood earlier this year.
Rubina’s dad Rafiq Qureshi was beaten by police with bamboo sticks.
He needed hospital treatment after confronting officials supervising an operation to clear land for a railway station extension.
Rubina’s home was demolished just six days after her child co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail saw his similar home torn down.

Wow, laying it on a little thick, don’t you think? The photographer even made her sit on that board with nails sticking out of it.

I kind of agree with you.
I also don’t understand why they should get better treatment then any other kid in that slum? They were only in a movie. If we expect the director or someone to do something they shoudl do it for the whole slum not just these random kids they picked for the movie.
So she gets a house and everything and the kid next to her that wasn’t in a movie can just die?

I don’t think the author wrote this to imply that she should get preferential treatment. It seems more like he wanted to bring to light the treatment of these people who live in the slums. “Look, even an international actress had lost her home”

Well, didn’t Danny Boyle promise to give them apartments? What happened to that?
And I think the slums were demolished because they were illegal encroachments on the railway land.

And the followup:
The film’s producers, Danny Boyle and Christian Colson, have offered an apartment to the Ali family and they will decide next month whether to accept it.

He actually set up scholarships for all the actors used on the proviso that they regularly attended school. They all, that’s every single one of them, failed to attend school.
Also, Danny Boyle was advised not to pay them the cash equivalent due to the likelihood of the family stealing the money.
Educate yourself before you comment with all this unnecessary, over-reactionary, knee-jerk rationale.

This is quite a sad story for the Ali family. Everyone living in our society has a responsibility towards himself or herself and those around him or her worldwide.

I blame Tom Cruise, Penelope was exposed to him for far too long and now lacks a firm grasp of reality and a heart. She’s a multimillionare and could easily help out those children who made the movie so wonderful, and her bank account so much bigger, but no, she’s a twat just like Tom.

Can someone explain to me why these kids are living in the slums still?

Because when your family lives in a slum, going to school is a top priority. Danny Boyle is a hero.

Although I am sure that Danny Boyle did the best he could in a bad situation (slums in india), these children have to work not go to school.
Their family probably feel that if they cannot get food that day, what use is it that their child gets a scholarship. They probably figure that they won’t live long enough if the whole family do not eat.
Another point is that culturally, the children work. They are probably not used to the discipline of school, that will be completely alien to them.
I know of a family (not in india, in another country) that did not have an indoor toilet. Their daughter married an English guy, who had an indoor toilet built for them. They still don’t use as a toilet, but use it as a broom cupboard.
Sometimes it is not the benefactor at fault,or the person benefitting, or the family. It is just a culteral thing.

A scholarship huh, that is laughable. I bet that ate a hole in the 345 million dollars in profit this movie made.

The whole slum should receive help. What’s ten million when the profit is so very very high.

You may be sitting there and thinking to yourself, “But, I am just ONE person, what can I do?” What can you do? You’ve gotta say, “They’re human beings, goddammit! Their life has value! I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” Then you can go sit down on your couch and feel a little better about yourself… or you can get involved in the hundreds of organizations out there.

But sadly that’s not true. All men are not born equal. Some life’s are priceless, some are worth a few pennies. I hope this will someday become a forgotten horror but with the way the human race is going I think it’s only going to get worse.

Another thing some of you forget: the caste system. If these kids belong to the caste they appear to, it is against the beliefs of many in that country to assist them in any way – that would be interfering with their karma or something. So it’s a bit bigger problem than just some millionaire director giving them money or scholarships.

You’re assuming Danny Boyle made $345 million. He didn’t, the distributor did. They’re just as likely to part ways with money for a good cause as is GE or Microsoft.

Reality is crooked. Centuries of conditioning makes people from lower income group have kids right, left and center [more hands - for begging, working, prostitution and whatever else comes in the way]. If nothing works, migrate to the nearest city and take up the first available public place. Before you know huge slums have come up. Real rehabilitation is simple and inexpensive. Migrate them back from where they came [real estate will be 1/10th if not 1/50th] and create opportunities for them there. But then, what will happen to politicians who mine these slums for votes, power and politics.

We shouldnot blame the directors or Holywood, or even the western society as a whole, for the situation where this poor girl is just a small part in. It’s india’s precious social class system and unless someone intervenes, Indians will keep on sustaining this systeem as it will provide them a protective environment where the richt stay rich and the poor.. well… as you can see. I am an Indian from South America, raised in Europe and this is one my ways of helping them

The two young, main children both have trusts that will mature when they turn 21. This is to stop the spending of the money by others.
This was the final answer and has been implemented.
The Apartment is the physical building only, One which the family will have troubles maintaining (bills, rates etc)
