The funeral for one of this world’s most beautiful voices was more star studded than many award shows, but even more news-worthy than the A-lister’s appearances was the eulogy that Kevin Costner gave for his good friend Whitney Houston.

Kevin Costner, who met and befriended Whitney on the set of their 1992 blockbuster, The Bodyguard, made a heartfelt and truly moving speech at the memorial service for Houston.

Costner told the crowd that ‘Whitney was the only one who could play Rachel Marron at that time.’ Because, even during a time when interracial relationships were not as widely accepted as today, she was the perfect fit for that role.

Costner gave what many considered to be the perfect eulogy, telling the audience the tale of Whitney’s audition for The Bodyguard where her make-up had melted in the bright lights of the studio, making her face a streaky mess. Costner recounted that Whitney had wanted to use her own make-up, and said, ‘She seemed so small and sad at that moment and I asked her why she did it. She said, ‘I just wanted to look my best.’ If Whitney could hear me now, I’d say you weren’t enough, you were great … People just didn’t like you, they loved you.’

Yes, Whitney, you were great, and we wish that life would have treated you kind… but we will always love you…
