Progestin Only Birth Control
Women like to have freedom in life. That’s why we had women’s suffrage and fought so hard for equal pay and equal rights. It’s also why we fought to have control of our own bodies and sexuality. Birth Control is one way in which we have control over what happens in our lives. We don’t have to rely on a man to provide contraception these days or be pregnant when we don’t want to be. Many women take a pill that includes estrogen and progestin. This provides excellent birth control. Some women have reactions to estrogen and can not use it so they think that they can not be on an effective birth control. That is not true. There is pills with only progestin in them called the mini pill.
How it works
The progestin only pill works by thickening the cervical mucus. This makes it harder for the sperm to swim. It also thins the lining of the uterus or also known as the endometrium. This also stops sperm from reaching the egg and implanting. The minipill can also for some people sometimes suppresses ovulation. It doesn’t happen for everyone though. The mini pill to have maximum effectiveness, must be taken at the same time every day within three hours. This is where people have problems with it. You need to set an alarm each day to make sure it is taken properly. It takes a few hours to reach the maximum level.
Why Would You Take This Pill?
Some women are put on it because they are breast-feeding. It was always thought that combo birth control pills that contained estrogen, may affect milk production. Recent studies have not conclusively proved this theory but health care providers still prescribe the mini pill instead. You may also be prescribed this if you are over 35 years old and smoke or have a history of blood clots. The mini pill has less side effects than other pills so many women choose it for this reason. There is also drug interactions for some estrogen containing medication.
One of the best reasons to take it is the minipill is a very reversible method of contraception. You can become pregnant immediately after the drug leaves your system. There is no waiting period except for one day. The mini pill can also help a type of skin inflammation that happens during your period.
Who Shouldn’t Take it
The minipill is great for some people but not for all. If you have or had breast cancer in the past.
You have liver disease
You’ve had weight loss (the band) surgery
You have uterine bleeding
that is unexplained
You take medications for certain conditions like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS or seizure medications.
You can’t take the pill at the same time daily because of a work schedule issue or you have a forgetful personality.
Side Effects and Potential Risks
The mini pill may not be as effective as other pills as It’s estimated that 13 out of 100 women will get pregnant while on it each year. This is usually due to improperly taking it at the wrong time and not using a backup form of contraception. The success rate is much higher for perfect use. It also does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases so if you and your partner haven’t been tested it you have multiple partners, condom use is highly recommended. If you do become pregnant while on it, you have a slightly above normal risk of an ectopic pregnancy. These are extremely dangerous as the egg implants outside of the uterine lining where it is extremely dangerous for the mother and the baby can not survive in this environment.
